Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently discussed his views on Apple’s policies, calling the company “coasting” on its past success and stating that it hasn’t invented anything great in a while. Zuckerberg made these comments during a three-hour podcast with Joe Rogan.
Zuckerberg gave credit to the iPhone as one of the most important inventions, but argued that Apple has put rules in place that feel arbitrary. He claimed that if Apple allowed other companies to use its protocol, there would be better competitors to AirPods. This is particularly relevant for Meta, which has faced challenges with Apple’s App Store policies and restrictions on hardware.
Apple’s iOS restrictions have made it harder for Meta to compete on hardware and wiped out billions of dollars in advertising revenue. Zuckerberg believes that if Apple relaxed its rules, Meta would make twice as much profit. The company’s reliance on favoring its own products will ultimately hurt it, according to Zuckerberg.
In a broader discussion, Zuckerberg talked about the future of tech, including neural interfaces and augmented reality glasses. He envisions a world where physical and digital worlds blend together seamlessly, with virtual objects and people beaming into physical space. The internet will become “overlaid” on the physical world, Zuckerberg predicted.
The comments from Zuckerberg come as Apple faces increasing pressure to open up its ecosystem. Changes in the European Union and a lawsuit from the US Department of Justice have forced the company to make adjustments. However, it seems that Apple is intent on maintaining its closed system until it’s forced to change.
