Market Basket’s executive committee has put Chief Executive Arthur T. Demoulas on paid leave after months of tension with the board over business matters. The three-member committee is also investigating whether Demoulas planned a potential work stoppage to protect his job. In response, executives aligned with longtime supermarket boss expressed their denial that they were involved in planning such an action.
Demoulas’ family members and top lieutenants were also suspended by the committee. According to Joe Schmidt, director of operations for the chain, accusing the management team of planning a walkout is false and “preposterous.” The board’s claim that Demoulas would stage a work stoppage due to his differences with them is seen as unfounded.
