Marvel has finally delivered on its promise to revive the Fantastic Four franchise with a fresh start. Critics are singing its praises, citing a distinct retro-futuristic aesthetic and family-focused themes that set it apart from other MCU films.
Directed by Matt Shakman, who brought his WandaVision sensibilities to the project, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has won over many with its well-crafted emotional core and engaging cast. Academy Award-nominee Vanessa Kirby shines as Sue Storm, bringing intelligence, warmth, and power to her character’s journey through motherhood.
While not without its flaws, the film’s visually stunning retro-futuristic world-building is a standout feature. The 1960s-inspired style, courtesy of cinematographer Jess Hall, is reminiscent of classic sci-fi films like Mad Men and Tomorrowland.
