A federal judge has approved a multibillion-dollar settlement allowing colleges to pay athletes directly, and lawmakers are now gearing up to educate high school students and their families about the changes.
Maryland Del. Denise Roberts is hosting the first Hustle HQ event at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School to help student-athletes understand what’s changed and how it will impact them as they prepare for college. The event aims to provide guidance on financial planning, contracts, and eligibility concerns.
Roberts emphasized the importance of preparing parents and students for this new landscape, saying “Most parents and families don’t even know what NIL means.” She wants to arm student-athletes with the information needed to make informed decisions about their future, particularly those from low-income backgrounds who may rely on sports as a means of escaping poverty.
The event is free to attend and will include talks with financial planners, lawyers, and athletic directors. Roberts expects it to be a recurring event in the coming months and years, as the rules surrounding athlete compensation continue to evolve.
