Maryland’s Freshman Phenom Queen Makes History with Game-Winning Shot

Maryland’s Derik Queen made history on Sunday night when he hit a game-winning shot at the buzzer in their 72-71 win over Colorado State. The 6-foot-10 freshman center, who became only the fourth freshman to hit a buzzer-beating game winner in the NCAA men’s tournament, sent the Terrapins to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016.

Queen’s winning shot was the result of coach Kevin Willard drawing up a play that Queen, with his teammates’ trust and confidence, delivered. The Terrapins overcame a poor first half and rallied in the second half behind balanced scoring from all five starters, including Julian Reese, Rodney Rice, and other contributors.

Maryland’s victory marks their first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 2016 and sets up a matchup against top-seeded Florida on Thursday. Queen, who scored 17 points in the game, also led the team with six rebounds and two blocks, showcasing his all-around skills.

Queen’s historic shot has been hailed as “a really difficult shot” by Colorado State coach Niko Medved, adding to its significance. The Terrapins’ character and resilience in bouncing back from a tough first half were also praised by Willard, who noted that this win will be a moment the team will remember for the rest of their lives.

The win sends Maryland forward into the NCAA Tournament’s next round, giving fans something to celebrate as they look forward to Thursday’s matchup against Florida.
