Mass Officials Warn of Suspected Avian Flu Cases in Multiple Cities

State environmental and health officials are advising the public to be cautious due to suspected cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus in various Massachusetts municipalities. The Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, Department of Agricultural Resources, and Department of Public Health have reported several outbreaks since early 2022.

Residents are urged to report any dead or sick birds to the authorities, as well as follow guidelines for handling domestic poultry and wildlife. It is essential for farmers and pet owners to maintain strong biosecurity measures to prevent disease transmission.

People can reduce their risk by keeping pets indoors, following proper hygiene practices when hunting, and limiting human access to bird areas. Domestic poultry owners should isolate new birds for a month before introducing them to the flock and avoid sharing equipment with other bird owners.
