Mass Protests Sweep Across Eastern Europe’s Former Yugoslavia

Mass protests are sweeping across Serbia, Slovakia, and Georgia, with tens of thousands taking to the streets since late last year and early this year. The demonstrations have been marked by strong youth participation, but their underlying reasons vary.

Protesters in each country share a sense of frustration and disillusionment, but the specifics of their grievances differ. In Serbia, protests focus on issues such as corruption, poor governance, and historical revisionism.

In Slovakia, demonstrators are primarily concerned with high energy prices and inflationary pressures that have pushed many into poverty. Georgia’s protesters, meanwhile, are driven by a desire for greater accountability from the government regarding its handling of corruption scandals.

The sustained engagement of young people in these protests highlights the resilience and determination of this generation to effect change in their countries’ politics and economies.
