The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) has directed six gas companies to reduce total gas bills by five percent for March and April bills. The move comes in response to high usage during the winter due to harsh weather, lingering concerns about inflation, and increased delivery expenses.
Customers who have seen dramatic increases in their bills can expect some relief. A 7NEWS viewer shared a bill summary showing a 50% increase from January to February. In January 2024, the bill was $332, while this year it jumped to $501. For February, last year’s bill was $326, and this year’s is $488.
In response to customer concerns, Governor Maura Healey asked the DPU to reduce rates in a letter sent last week. The governor emphasized the need for proactive measures to stabilize future price volatility and make rate changes more transparent.
Eversource acknowledged energy affordability as a top priority and welcomed any rate relief, particularly considering the high gas bills customers have received this winter. For many customers, reduced bills are seen as a welcome change.
