A powerful lake-effect snow storm brought significant snowfall to parts of the US Northeast, with western New York state receiving nearly 4ft (1.22m) in just four days. The heavy snowfall led to states of emergency being declared in New York and Pennsylvania, enabling National Guard troops to assist in rescuing drivers trapped in snow.
Further snow is expected this week, with up to 6ft forecast for upstate New York by Tuesday. Colder conditions are also expected to spread south through the eastern US, with temperatures 10-15F below average forecast for central and eastern Gulf coast states.
In Asia, a severe snowstorm hit South Korea, with Seoul receiving its third-heaviest snowfall on record. More than 40cm (16in) fell last Wednesday, causing over 1,000 schools to be shut down in the country’s most populous province. At least five people lost their lives due to the storm, including four from collapsing structures and one in a traffic accident.
The National Weather Service warned of continued freezing temperatures into Thursday, resulting in flight cancellations and ferry route suspensions. However, temperatures have since risen, melting much of the snow by Sunday.
