A massive underwater volcano, Axial Seamount, is on the verge of eruption after 2,000 earthquakes were recorded in just one day. Located less than 300 miles from the US coastline, the volcano’s proximity to human settlements raises concerns. However, its location one mile under the ocean is expected to limit the impact on human life.
Experts warn that this could be the biggest eruption yet, following previous eruptions in 2015, 2011, and 1998. Oregon State University geophysicist William Chadwick predicts an eruption by the end of the year due to recent spikes in seismic activity.
Chadwick notes that while the rate of unrest is currently stable, it’s impossible to predict exactly when or how the next eruption will occur. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Scott Nooner also warns that “nothing seems imminent” at present.
However, scientists suggest 2025 as a possible target date for the eruption. While the impact on human life may be limited, it could have devastating effects on local sea life. UW School of Oceanography professor Deborah Kelley notes that even in previous eruptions, ecosystems have shown remarkable resilience, colonizing and adapting to new environments.
To prepare for potential eruptions, Chadwick emphasizes the importance of ongoing monitoring of the volcano. As Axial Seamount is always active, experts are hopeful that their constant monitoring will allow them to predict an eruption and mitigate damage to local ecosystems.
