Expert Erica Newcome, STEM and interdisciplinary research librarian at the University of Miami Libraries, shared her expertise on writing clear and logical prompts that can yield relevant outputs.
To create an effective prompt, follow the CLEAR method: concise, logical, explicit, adaptive, and reflective. Be concise by avoiding excessive language, make sure your prompt is structured and coherent, define output specifications clearly, be flexible in refining prompts for unsuitable outputs, and continuously evaluate and improve them.
When crafting a prompt, consider what you want to achieve. For instance, using more specific keywords can provide more accurate results. Erica showed examples of prompts that were either explicit or implicit, highlighting the importance of clarity.
It’s also essential to verify AI-generated information by checking its source and comparing it with other reliable sources. The SIFT Method (Stop before you read, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, and Trace claims) can help you evaluate the output of your prompts.
As technology advances rapidly, adaptability is crucial. Consider current events and adjust your prompt accordingly. For instance, a prompt about social media usage and anxiety might be more effective when linked to specific studies or data. By being reflective about your prompts and continuously improving them, you’ll get better results from AI tools.
Remember, AI is not a real person, so don’t use phrases like “please” or “thank you.” With practice and patience, mastering effective AI prompts will help you harness the full potential of these tools for research.
