Brent Hinds, 51, lead guitarist and former frontman of the acclaimed Atlanta heavy metal band Mastodon, has died in a motorcycle accident. According to authorities, Mr. Hinds was riding his Harley-Davidson when he crashed into another vehicle at an intersection near downtown Atlanta on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred when the other driver failed to yield while turning left, striking Mr. Hinds’s bike. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. An investigation into the accident is underway.
Mastodon formed in 2000 and has gained widespread recognition for its unique blend of metal, jazz, and progressive rock. The band’s music often explores complex themes and concepts, as seen in their concept album “Leviathan” (2004), which was inspired by Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick”.
The band’s lead vocalist, Mr. Hinds, was a founding member and played a key role in shaping the group’s sound. He left the band in March under unclear circumstances but had previously stated that he was kicked out.
Born on January 16, 1974, in Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. Hinds was born into a musical family. His parents, Dean Campbell and Billy Hinds, survive him, as do his siblings, including brother Bradley Ray Hinds, who passed away in 2010.
