Veteran pitcher Max Scherzer made his first start with the Toronto Blue Jays, but it was cut short due to right lat soreness. Scherzer left after three innings, allowing two home runs and throwing 45 pitches. The Orioles took advantage of the bullpen, scoring six runs in the last two innings to win 9-5.
Scherzer initially appeared settled down, striking out one Oriole and allowing only three hits before his departure. However, he struggled with a pre-existing thumb pain issue that flared up during warm-ups. “Frustrated” is how Toronto manager John Schneider described Scherzer’s mood after the loss.
In a statement, Scherzer revealed that the new injury is related to his thumb and warned that returning to pitch could put him at “imminent danger.” He plans to get 100% healed before resuming pitching. The Blue Jays had agreed to a one-year, $15.5 million contract with Scherzer in January, hoping he would form a strong team with the veteran pitcher.
