New York City’s Campaign Finance Board is set to vote on the first tranche of payments for the 2025 mayoral election on December 16, potentially affecting Mayor Eric Adams’ reelection bid. The board will decide whether to approve millions of dollars in public matching funds based on a candidate’s past campaign.
The CFB has previously investigated and found potential violations by Mayor Adams during his successful 2021 campaign, which received record funding from taxpayers. A federal indictment alleges that the mayor obtained $10 million in matching funds fraudulently, with claims of improper donations and unreported spending.
Councilmember Lincoln Restler questioned why the board would give Mayor Adams more money despite these concerns. The CFB has already sent 13 requests for information about the 2021 campaign, but received only partial responses from the mayor’s team.
The decision on public funding will be crucial for Mayor Adams’ chances in the June 2025 primary, where he faces several Democratic challengers who are also eligible for matching funds. If denied, Mayor Adams would face a serious disadvantage in the election.
