McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme End Partnership Amid Declining Sales

McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme have ended their partnership, marking the end of the fast-food giant’s dessert options that included Oreo McFlurrys and Hot Fudge Sundaes. The decision comes after the companies failed to reduce costs in line with demand, rendering the partnership unsustainable.

The two companies initially partnered in 2023, starting with a test rollout at 160 McDonald’s restaurants in Kentucky. They aimed to offer nationwide availability by 2026 but ultimately decided to part ways. Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth stated that consumer excitement and demand exceeded expectations during the initial test, but costs remained too high.

Krispy Kreme will now focus on expanding its doughnut availability, while McDonald’s prioritizes building its breakfast business. The partnership was marked by promotions, including a free doughnut offer in October 2024 for customers showing a McDonald’s receipt from that period. Despite the initial success of the test, the companies decided to end their collaboration due to declining sales and unaffordable costs.
