A McDonald’s employee who helped police track down Brian Thompson’s killer may not receive the $60,000 reward due to complicated rules and a potential dispute over the reward amount. Mangione was arrested after an employee reported suspicious activity, revealing fake IDs, guns, and other incriminating evidence.
The employee’s tip played a significant role in Mangione’s arrest but may not be eligible for the full reward. To receive the reward, the employee must be designated by the investigating agency and reviewed by an interagency committee. The Secretary of State would then need to sign off on the decision.
Additionally, the entire reward amount is subject to dispute, based on factors such as information value, threat level, and source cooperation. Mangione’s $10,000 offer from the NYPD is also tied to a Crime Stoppers program, which requires tipsters to use a unique reference number to claim their reward. The employee may not be able to receive the full reward if they used 911 instead of Crime Stoppers.
The reward will only be paid out after Mangione’s conviction and indictment. As such, the McDonald’s employee could wait for an extended period before receiving any compensation.
