Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy completed his Grand Slam last month but struggled at the PGA Championship in Charlotte, finishing 47th with a 3-over score. The controversy surrounding McIlroy’s driver, which was deemed non-conforming by the USGA, likely contributed to his decision not to speak with media members.
McIlroy, who is endorsed by TaylorMade, had to switch drivers after being ruled out due to the failed test. Fellow competitor Xander Schauffele suggested that Scottie Scheffler may have also made a change, although neither player publicly commented on their equipment swaps.
The PGA of America released a statement confirming that the USGA was invited to conduct club testing at the tournament, which is part of the organization’s regular programs for driver testing. The standard process involves testing about a third of the field, and the USGA reported finding non-conforming driver heads despite the program.
