Rory McIlroy returned to golf just a week after winning the Masters, where he finally achieved his decade-long pursuit of the career Grand Slam. In a recent press conference, McIlroy shared what’s been on his mind since his triumph at Augusta’s 18th hole.
Since breaking down at the tournament, McIlroy took some time to relax and recharge with family. He traveled to London to check out their new residence and visited Belfast to see his parents, friends, and family members, including lifelong coach Michael Bannon. McIlroy also spent quality time with his wife Erica, daughter Poppy, and friend Harry.
The Ulsterman’s trip was a welcome respite from the emotional rollercoaster he faced during the Masters. However, it appears that golf is calling him back to action quickly. McIlry admitted that he’s still feeling under the weather due to a cold and needs to get back into practice mode before teaming up with friend Shane Lowry at this week’s Zurich Classic.
Despite his recent struggles, people from all walks of life reached out to McIlroy after his Masters win, including two U.S. Presidents – Donald Trump and Barack Obama. The 35-year-old golfer expressed gratitude for the support, stating that it was humbling to see how his journey resonated with others who have faced similar challenges.
Now, McIlroy is focused on defending their 2024 New Orleans victory alongside Shane Lowry. He acknowledged that while his trip was wonderful, it’s essential to get back into practice mode and avoid letting his teammate down during the tournament.
