Measles and Mumps Outbreaks in Michigan Raise Concern

Michigan is facing a concerning outbreak of measles and mumps cases. Dr. Matthew Sims, Director of Infectious Disease Research at Corewell Health, says both diseases pose significant health risks. The latest case was reported in Macomb County, while Oakland County confirmed its first case since 2022.

Measles is more contagious and deadly than mumps. The MMR vaccine protects against all three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. However, vaccination rates are key to preventing outbreaks. “When people aren’t getting the vaccines,” Dr. Sims warns, “that’s when we get these outbreaks. And most of those affected have not been vaccinated or received inadequate vaccinations.”
