Measles and Strep Infections on the Rise, CDC Warns

A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed a significant increase in invasive group A strep infections over the past decade. The incidence of these infections rose from 3.6 cases per 100,000 people in 2013 to 8.2 cases per 100,000 people in 2022.

The CDC is urging accelerated efforts to prevent and control these infections, particularly among vulnerable populations such as individuals aged 65 or older, American Indian or Alaska Native persons, residents of long-term care facilities, people experiencing homelessness, and those who inject drugs. These groups are at highest risk of infection due to various factors, including weakened immune systems and limited access to healthcare.

The CDC has also been warning about the measles outbreak, with over 607 confirmed cases across the US as of April 4. The agency has sent alerts to healthcare providers on prevention and treatment measures, and other states have reported outbreaks, including a recent one in southwest Kansas.
