Measles Case Reported in New Orleans Area for First Time in 2025

A measles case has been confirmed in the New Orleans area, marking Louisiana’s first reported case of the year. The patient, an unvaccinated adult living in Region 1, is currently isolating and receiving treatment at a hospital. Health officials believe the case may be linked to international travel.

This is the state’s first measles case in over a year, following three cases in 2024 that were also tied to international travel. Measles is highly contagious and can cause severe complications, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and death.

Symptoms typically appear within 7-14 days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Early signs may be mistaken for the common cold or flu. The MMR vaccine is effective in preventing measles, with two doses providing about 97% protection.

Those who think they’ve been exposed to measles should contact their healthcare provider before visiting in person. If symptoms appear, individuals are advised to stay home and seek medical attention immediately. For more information on measles guidance for patients and providers, visit ldh.la.gov/measles.
