Measles Cases Reported in Texas, Tanzania, and Polio Outbreaks Worldwide

Two measles cases have been confirmed in unvaccinated school-age children in Gaines County, Texas, with two more reported earlier this month in Harris County. The Texas Department of State Health Services has said the children were hospitalized but have since recovered.

In contrast, a deadly Marburg virus outbreak in Tanzania has claimed 10 lives, with another death announced recently. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 2 confirmed cases and 8 suspected cases, resulting in a case-fatality rate of nearly 100%.

Meanwhile, polio outbreaks continue to spread globally. Three new cases were reported this week, including one wild poliovirus type 1 case in Pakistan. Ethiopia and Niger have also seen new vaccine-derived cases, with the annual totals rising significantly.

Additionally, an avian flu outbreak is affecting poultry farms across eight US states, prompting more state measures and warnings. The virus has been detected on commercial duck farms in California and Ohio, among others.

In Iowa, two cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) have been confirmed in wild deer, with efforts underway to monitor the situation further.

Measles in Texas and Tanzania pose public health risks, while polio outbreaks highlight the need for strengthened vaccination programs. The ongoing avian flu threat also underscores the importance of poultry health measures.
