Two new measles cases have been reported in Utah, bringing the total number of cases this year to two. According to the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, neither of the infected individuals were vaccinated against the virus.
The latest case was reported in Utah County, while the other individual is located in the southwest portion of the state. Both patients are unvaccinated and are not believed to be connected to a recent measles case in Utah County.
Public health investigators are working to determine where the infected individuals may have exposed others to the virus. The investigation is ongoing as more details become available.
Measles symptoms typically appear within seven to 14 days after exposure, including a high fever above 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit and a cough, runny nose, or red eyes. A rash usually appears within four days of a fever.
Despite the risk, over 90% of Utahns have been vaccinated against measles, providing protection against infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a total of 1,214 confirmed measles cases in 34 states and the District of Columbia this year.
