Measles cases have surged in New York, prompting Governor Kathy Hochul to launch a new web portal aimed at improving public access to vaccines and health information. Four cases of measles have been confirmed statewide, three in New York City and one in Suffolk County.
Hochul emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating that “measles doesn’t belong in the 21st century.” The state’s new web portal, ny.gov/measles, provides resources for vaccination efforts, public education, and healthcare provider engagement. Officials stress that misinformation about vaccines has contributed to declining immunization rates.
According to state data, 81.4% of babies under two years old have received at least one dose of the MMR vaccine, but experts emphasize the need for two doses for full protection. Measles is a highly contagious airborne disease with severe complications, including pneumonia and brain inflammation.
The state has intensified efforts to combat vaccine fraud, working with schools, law enforcement, and health officials to prevent falsification of vaccine records. Health officials advise anyone uncertain about their immunization status to contact their healthcare provider or local health department.
To address the growing public health concern, visit ny.gov/measles or the CDC website for details on measles prevention and vaccination.
