Michigan has confirmed its second measles case of 2025, in an adult from Kent County. The infected individual recently traveled abroad and returned to the US, spreading the disease to others.
“Measles is a highly contagious disease that can spread quickly,” said Dr. Adam London, Health Officer at KCHD. “We urge residents to check their immunization status and get vaccinated, especially if planning international travel.”
The measles virus spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. It can stay in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves.
Several locations, including Detroit Metro Airport and Gerald R. Ford International Airport, have been identified as potential exposure sites.
Residents who visited these locations at the specified times should monitor themselves for symptoms of measles for 21 days after exposure. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic rash.
The measles vaccine is highly effective, with two doses providing 97% protection against the disease. However, some people with weakened immune systems may not be able to get vaccinated.
Residents can check their vaccination status online through the Michigan immunization portal. If you’re unvaccinated and exposed to the virus, getting the measles vaccine within 72 hours of exposure can help reduce your risk of developing measles.
