A doctor who treated kids during a measles outbreak in Texas was shown on video with the virus despite being in a clinic just days before meeting Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Dr. Ben Edwards, who has been treating children in a makeshift clinic set up in Seminole, Texas, appeared in a video posted by the anti-vaccine group Children’s Health Defense, where he admitted to having measles. The video shows Edwards working without wearing a mask and interacting with people who did not appear sick.
Edwards met with Kennedy about a week after the video was posted, and praised two unproven treatments for measles. Kennedy’s decision to meet with Edwards has been criticized as “wholly irresponsible” by some experts, including Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that measles is most contagious four days before and after the rash appears, making it unlikely that Edwards’ conduct was reasonable. Experts also question why Kennedy chose to meet with Edwards rather than other doctors who were treating children in the outbreak.
