Measles Exposure in Northern Virginia, Action Steps Advised

Two measles exposures were reported at Reagan National Airport and on the Yellow Line last Friday. The exposures occurred between noon and 2:30 p.m. on the terminal shuttle bus and between 12:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. on the Yellow Line train from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport station to the Silver Line Train heading towards Downtown Largo.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is coordinating an effort to identify people who might have been exposed, including contacting potentially exposed passengers on specific flights. Maryland residents who recently traveled together internationally are believed to be the source of these measles exposures.

If you were at Reagan National Airport or on the Yellow Line during the specified times and have never received a measles-containing vaccine, you may be at risk of developing measles. Health officials advise individuals in this situation to contact their healthcare provider immediately.

For those who have not been vaccinated or are immunocompromised, symptoms of measles can appear within 21 days of potential exposure. Isolation is recommended if symptoms occur, and contacting a healthcare provider before seeking medical attention can help protect others.

According to VDH, two additional confirmed cases of measles were reported on March 5 and Friday, March 14. Maryland residents who recently traveled internationally are believed to be the source of these new exposures.

To check your immunization status, call your healthcare provider or request records from the VDH Immunization Record Request Form. For more information about measles, visit www.vdh.virginia.gov/measles/.
