Measles Exposure Investigated at Dulles International Airport

A potential measles exposure has been reported at Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia after an international traveler with a confirmed case visited the airport last week. The person traveled through Concourse A and the baggage area between June 19, 8-11 pm, before heading to Concourse C.

According to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), if you were at these locations during the same time as the infected individual, it’s crucial to verify your vaccination history or have proof of measles immunity. VDH is working to identify potential exposures and contacting passengers on specific flights.

There have been three reported cases of measles in Virginia so far this year. The CDC reports close to 1,200 confirmed cases nationwide, with a significant increase in international travel-related cases. Measles symptoms typically begin within seven to 21 days after exposure, progressing from high fever, cough, and runny nose to a rash that starts on the face.

VDH officials urge people traveling internationally to be fully vaccinated against measles. With one in five individuals diagnosed with measles being hospitalized, it’s essential to take precautions seriously. If you have concerns, contact your local health department immediately for post-exposure treatment options.
