A sold-out Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, may have exposed thousands to measles, according to health officials. An unvaccinated person attended the May 15 show and was in the venue from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., potentially infecting others who visited during those hours. The highly contagious virus can cause respiratory and neurologic complications, particularly in children.
Residents are encouraged to get up to date on their vaccinations and be aware of measles symptoms, which include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and rash. If exposed or showing symptoms, individuals should contact a healthcare provider before seeking medical attention. The CDC reports 1,024 confirmed cases and three deaths in 31 states so far this year, with most cases involving unvaccinated or unknown vaccination status.
