A second child with measles in Texas has died, although the exact cause of death is unknown. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to attend the funeral.
This case brings the first reported deaths in connection with measles in the US in over a decade. Since January, 481 cases have been confirmed in Texas alone, including six infants at a day care center who tested positive within two weeks.
Hospitalizations due to measles have also risen, with 56 people hospitalized since the disease began spreading in January. The risk of death from measles is relatively low, but still significant, with one in every 1,000 children dying from respiratory and neurological complications.
The outbreak has spread beyond Texas to a few other states, with 628 reported cases in at least 21 states and Washington, D.C., so far this year.
