Measles Outbreak Confirmed at Detroit Metro Airport

Michigan’s second measles case of the year has been confirmed in a Kent County resident who recently traveled abroad. The individual visited several locations in Michigan and New Jersey between March 24-28, potentially exposing people at Detroit Metro Airport.

People who were present at these locations during specific times should monitor themselves for measles symptoms for 21 days after exposure. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash.

Measles can spread through the air or remain in the air for up to two hours. The disease can lead to serious complications, especially in young children, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.

Kent County health officials are urging residents to check their immunization status and get vaccinated, especially if planning to travel internationally or into areas with active measles outbreaks. As of December, nearly 85% of Kent County residents had at least one dose of the MMR vaccine.

This case is a reminder of how quickly measles can spread and the importance of vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed over 480 measles cases nationwide as of March 27.
