Measles Outbreak Confirmed in Hays County

A measles outbreak has been confirmed in Hays County, with a resident testing positive for the virus. The individual, who is considered unvaccinated, was contagious from May 11 to 19, 2025. Public health officials are working to identify and notify those who may have been exposed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explain that measles spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes. The virus can stay in the air and on surfaces for two hours, even after the infected person has left.

Symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, tiny white spots inside the mouth, and a characteristic rash that starts at the face and spreads down to the rest of the body. Measles can be prevented with a measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

The Hays County Health Department is offering post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to those who may have been exposed. PEP includes either the MMR vaccine or immune globulin, which can provide temporary protection against measles. Insured individuals should check with their doctor or local pharmacy to see what vaccines are offered.

Residents of Hays County who were exposed and do not qualify for TVFC or other low-cost vaccination programs should contact the Hays County Health Department at (512) 393-5520 for guidance and assistance.
