Measles Outbreak Confirmed in Lubbock, Texas Family

A confirmed case of measles has been reported in Lubbock, Texas, with two cases within the same family from Gaines County. According to health officials, the number of confirmed cases is expected to rise as multiple people wait for test results.

The main symptoms of measles are high fever, runny nose, cough, red watery eyes, and a rash. Community Health Authority Dr. Ron Cook advises those showing symptoms to isolate immediately and contact their doctor.

The virus can be infectious four days before the rash appears, and one in five people who contract it will require hospitalization. Fortunately, vaccination is easily available for those who are not vaccinated.

Dr. Cook recommends getting vaccinated with two doses of the MMR vaccine to prevent over 97% of measles infections. Health officials have confirmed that a public health facility was used to treat the affected family, and anyone potentially exposed in the building will be contacted.
