The Utah Department of Health has confirmed nine measles cases in the state as of Tuesday. Seven cases have been reported in Utah County, while two new cases were added from other parts of the state. The infected individuals are all unvaccinated and had been exposed to people who previously had measles.
Symptoms typically appear within one to two weeks after exposure and include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that starts at the hairline before spreading across the face.
The MMR vaccine is 97% effective in preventing measles. The department recommends vaccination for pregnant women and stressed its importance for protecting babies who are not yet eligible for the vaccine.
Utah’s low vaccination rates, particularly among kindergarteners, have contributed to the outbreak. According to the CDC, there were over 1,200 confirmed measles cases nationwide last year, with three deaths reported.
