Measles Outbreak: Doctors Struggle to Prevent Spread

Measles cases linked to an outbreak in West Texas have reached 58, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Dr. Sanjay Gupta is on the ground investigating the outbreak and discussing the challenges doctors face in preventing its spread.

One major obstacle is the high incidence of flu cases in the area. When combined with measles, these flu cases can be particularly concerning for vulnerable populations like children and older adults. Doctors must balance the need to treat flu patients while also monitoring measles cases, which require special precautions to prevent transmission.

Additionally, some households may not be effective at eliminating norovirus, a highly contagious illness that often spreads during the holidays. Effective cleaning and hygiene practices are essential in preventing the spread of both measles and norovirus.

Dr. Gupta will continue to provide updates on the outbreak as more information becomes available.
