The Texas Department of State Health Services has released updated guidance for individuals living or traveling to 10 West Texas counties at the center of an ongoing measles outbreak. The region, which includes Cochran, Dallam, Dawson, Gaines, Garza, Lamar, Lynn, Lubbock, Terry and Yoakum counties, has reported over 500 cases and two child deaths.
Vaccination is recommended as the best defense against measles, with two doses of the MMR vaccine preventing over 97% of infections. The agency recommends:
– Children under 12 months receive an “outbreak” dose of the MMR vaccine.
– Children over 12 months old who have not been vaccinated should receive one dose and a follow-up shot in 28 days.
– Teens and adults should be up to date on their MMR vaccinations.
– Adults born between 1957 and 1968 may consider getting an additional dose if they only received one MMR vaccine.
– Certain groups, including those with severe immunodeficiency, pregnant women, and people under 50 IU vitamin A daily, are not recommended for the vaccine.
The state agency also cautions against using vitamin A as a treatment for measles, citing no specific antiviral therapy available. However, vitamin A may be administered to infants and children under medical supervision as part of supportive management.
Residents and travelers to these counties should consult with their healthcare provider about the guidance and recommended vaccinations.
