A confirmed case of measles has been reported at Miami Palmetto Senior High School in Pinecrest, Florida. According to officials, the infected person is a student between 15 and 19 years old.
Dr. Jyoti Somani, assistant director for Infectious Control at Jackson Health Systems, expressed surprise but not alarm about the case, citing South Florida’s high rate of international travel as a contributing factor.
“We see one case, there are often other cases,” she said. “The key is to get vaccinated, especially if you’re not fully immunized.”
Somani emphasized that vaccination is crucial in preventing measles and reducing its severity. She advised parents whose children have not been vaccinated or have only received one dose to consider getting them vaccinated immediately.
This case marks the first reported outbreak in Florida, adding to a growing list of cases across 10 states, including Texas, where an outbreak of over 146 cases was reported last year. A similar outbreak occurred at Manatee Bay Elementary School in Broward County Public Schools in February 2024.
