A measles outbreak has hit Denton County, with an adult testing positive for the highly contagious illness. The individual’s vaccination status is unknown, and officials have warned of possible exposure at several locations in the county.
The outbreak comes as another case was reported in Collin County last week, and two recent cases were also observed in Rockwall County. Denton County Public Health officials are advising residents to be cautious after identifying multiple potential measles exposure sites, including restaurants and stores.
Some of the affected locations include Pretty Burrito, Donut Plaza, Rangers Republic, Globe Life Field, Guitars and Growlers, Walmart, and WinCo Foods. The cases have not been linked to an existing outbreak in Denton County.
Measles is a serious illness that spreads mainly among unvaccinated people. The two-dose measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is 97% effective in preventing the disease and offers lifelong protection. Despite widespread vaccination, outbreaks continue to occur in communities with low vaccination rates.
Residents are advised to take precautions to prevent the spread of measles, including getting vaccinated if they have not already received the recommended doses.
