A measles outbreak is spreading across the US, with over 200 cases reported in 12 states as of March. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that at least 95% of a community be vaccinated to stop the spread of the highly contagious disease. However, Wasatch County falls short of this standard.
According to Jonelle Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the Wasatch County Health Department, vaccination is the best defense against measles. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is 97% effective after two doses. As of the 2023-24 school year, only 89.9% of kindergartners in Wasatch County had received their MMR vaccines.
Residents are advised to check their immunization records through the state’s Docket website or by contacting their primary care provider. The Wasatch County Health Department offers the MMR vaccine and recommends it for high-risk adults, including healthcare workers and those living with immunocompromised individuals.
Currently, Utah has no reported cases of measles, but health officials urge residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible to prevent further outbreaks.
