A toddler from Arapahoe County, Colorado has been hospitalized with a case of measles after returning from an international trip. This is the first hospitalization due to measles this year in Colorado. The child, who is under 5 years old and unvaccinated, contracted the disease while traveling to multiple locations with increased measles cases.
Colorado has recorded six cases of measles so far this year, all of which have been unvaccinated individuals. Measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to serious health problems if left untreated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the MMR vaccine as the best way to protect against measles. Vaccination within 72 hours of exposure can prevent infection. Those exposed may develop symptoms 7-21 days after exposure, which include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash.
Public health officials are urging Coloradans to get vaccinated to prevent further spread of the disease. Several MMR vaccination clinics have been set up in Arapahoe and Adams counties for exposed individuals.
