A positive measles case has been confirmed in an area school-aged child who recently visited a Lubbock healthcare facility. Lubbock Public Health is investigating the exposure and working with South Plains Public Health District to determine any affected areas within Lubbock. The child was not vaccinated for measles, and symptoms may appear 7-21 days after contact with the virus.
Symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a flat red rash that spreads down the body. Measles is highly contagious and can be spread through coughing, sneezing, breathing in contaminated droplets, or touching surfaces infected with the virus.
To prevent spreading the virus, individuals who believe they have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms should isolate themselves immediately and contact their healthcare provider to arrange testing. Citizens can call Lubbock Public Health at 806-775-2933 for information on what to do next.
