Measles Outbreak in Michigan U.P.: How to Stay Safe

Measles cases have risen in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with nine confirmed cases reported in the state. Healthcare professionals are urging parents to take the outbreak seriously due to its contagious nature and potential for serious complications.

According to medical experts, measles can cause a range of symptoms including fever, rash, cough, and irritated eyes. In some cases, it can lead to life-threatening problems such as swelling in the brain or serious lung infections.

While anyone can get measles, children under five are at high risk, and the disease spreads quickly if infected. Contagious individuals can spread the virus through breathing, coughing, or sneezing, even after they have left an area.

Vaccination is key to preventing measles. The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, is available at Aspirus Health System with first doses typically given around age one and second doses around kindergarten age (age five). One dose of the vaccine can be 93% effective, and two doses provide a 97% protection rate.

Parents and individuals should consult their healthcare provider to determine how to get vaccinated against measles. While the exact cause of the outbreak is still being investigated, experts emphasize the importance of taking preventative measures to stay safe.
