A confirmed case of measles has been reported in an unvaccinated child in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The child visited several locations during the infectious period and is now recovering at home.
The patient, a young boy who recently traveled to Vietnam, contracted measles due to his low vaccination rate. Health officials are working with contact tracing and notifying individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.
According to Dr. Alvin Wang, chief medical officer at the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety, there is always a chance of an outbreak when a contagious disease like measles is present. The patient has visited other public locations, and officials are advising those who were in contact with them to check their vaccination status and be vigilant for symptoms.
Measles is caused by a virus that can cause severe infections in the lungs and brain, leading to cognitive issues, deafness, or death. Vaccination with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective and safe. The first dose of the MMR vaccine cannot be given until children turn one.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions and seek medical attention if symptoms appear. If you suspect you or your child have measles, contact your healthcare provider or call 610-278-5117 for guidance.
