Measles Outbreak in New Mexico Triggers Health Investigation

A recent case of measles in an unvaccinated person in New Mexico has prompted a health investigation, according to state officials. The individual, from Lea County, had not sought medical care and the cause of death is currently under investigation.

New Mexico has reported 10 cases of measles since the outbreak began, all located within Lea County. Neighboring Gaines County, Texas, which shares a border with Lea County, has reported 159 cases of measles, including one death. However, officials have not yet confirmed any links between the two outbreaks.

The majority of New Mexico’s measles cases – six in adults and four in children aged 5-17 – have been among unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination histories. State health officials emphasize that vaccination is the only effective way to prevent the highly contagious respiratory illness.

To address the outbreak, the New Mexico Department of Health is offering free measles vaccinations in Lea County next week.
