Measles Outbreak in Philadelphia: Possible Exposures at Two Locations

Philadelphia health officials are warning the public about possible measles exposure at two locations in the city. The first possible exposure location was at CHOP Pediatric Primary Care South Philadelphia, where a person with measles visited on March 7 and 8. There were also reports of measles-like symptoms at the South Philadelphia Health and Literacy Center on those days.

The second possible exposure location was at CHOP’s emergency department, where a person with measles visited on March 10. Officials say that if you were exposed to measles during these times, you should contact your healthcare provider and stay home until March 27.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that can spread easily among unvaccinated people. To protect yourself, get vaccinated as soon as possible. Early symptoms of measles include fever, runny nose, cough, and puffy eyes, followed by a rash. If you develop any measles-like symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

People who are not protected from measles but are exposed should quarantine for 21 days after the exposure. Wearing a mask can help lower the chances of spreading measles to others. This is particularly important given the recent measles fatality in Texas and ongoing outbreaks in other parts of the country.
