A measles outbreak in Texas has reached over 300 cases, according to the state health department. The disease is not just about fever and rash; it can also lead to serious long-term effects. Dr. Chrisetta Morgan of Morgan Family Practice and Home Services warns that getting vaccinated is the best defense against measles.
The virus can cause encephalitis, a brain condition that leads to memory loss and seizures. This can occur 5-10 years after contracting the virus. Dr. Morgan advises San Antonio residents to take precautions: wear masks, wash hands frequently, and use sanitizer. She notes that someone infected with measles can spread it through air for two hours.
Getting vaccinated is crucial in preventing measles. If you’re unsure if you’ve been vaccinated, getting a vaccine won’t harm you. The clinic at Morgan Family Practice and Home Services offers free flu and MMR vaccines on August 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 5250 Callaghan Rd.
