Measles Outbreak in Utah Sparks Early Vaccine Push

A measles outbreak in Utah has parents on high alert, with many seeking early vaccination for their young children. The CDC recommends the first MMR vaccine at 12 months and a second dose at 4 years old. However, some parents are opting to get their babies vaccinated earlier.

According to health officials, about 90% of Utah’s population is vaccinated, leaving little ones vulnerable. Pediatrician Dr. Ellie Brownstein has administered early doses to about 20 families, which means the children will need three shots in total. The vaccines aim to prevent spread and protect those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons.

Dr. Brownstein warned that measles can lead to hospitalizations at a rate of one in five cases. To mitigate this risk, Utah’s health officials are urging vaccination to safeguard vulnerable populations.
