Measles Outbreak Possible in Central PA After Traveler Visits Local Businesses

A person infected with measles may have spread the disease during a recent visit to York and Adams counties in central Pennsylvania. The individual, who was contagious at the time of their visit, made stops at several businesses, including Sapp Bros. Travel Center, Farmhouse Restaurant, Hickory Falls Entertainment Center, Midway Mennonite Reception Center, and Garber Mennonite Fellowship.

The state Department of Health has reported that those who came into contact with the person at these locations may have been exposed to measles. The virus is highly contagious and can spread through breathing, coughing, or sneezing, as well as remaining infectious on surfaces for up to two hours.

Symptoms of measles include fever, coughing, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that starts on the head and spreads down the body. Infants and unvaccinated individuals are most at risk. If you believe you were exposed to measles or are experiencing symptoms, contact your healthcare provider or call the health department’s toll-free hotline at 877-PA-HEALTH for guidance.
