Measles Outbreak Rages On, Salmonella and Avian Flu Investigations Continue

A measles outbreak in West Texas continues to spread, with four new cases reported, bringing the total to 722. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health officials are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to whole cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales. Twenty-six people in 15 states have been sickened, with nine hospitalized.

Additionally, the CDC is tracking an unvaccinated Atlanta resident who contracted measles after traveling internationally. Health officials are working to identify potential exposures.

Meanwhile, a multistate avian flu outbreak has prompted Wisconsin to begin mandatory monthly milk sampling for H5N1 avian flu. The state’s dairy farms will be tested, with the goal of minimizing disruptions while providing farm-level results.

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported two new H5N1 outbreaks in poultry, one involving a commercial layer farm in Arizona and another in Pennsylvania.
