A resident of Hudson County who contracted measles could have exposed others to the highly contagious illness, according to the state Health Department. The department identified several locations where visitors may have been exposed during specific dates and times.
Measles cases have been reported in New Jersey, with five confirmed cases among residents so far this year. Three of these cases were part of a household outbreak in February. The cases involved unvaccinated individuals.
Health officials urge anyone who visited the following locations to monitor for symptoms:
– Emergency department at University Hospital (July 4)
– Pediatric emergency departments at Hackensack University Medical Center (July 4-5 and July 8-9)
– Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital (July 8-9)
– Roast’d Coffee (July 6)
– Newport Mall (July 6)
– Al-Basha (July 6)
– Elite Pediatrics (July 7)
– CVS (July 7)
Symptoms of measles include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red rash. People can spread the illness to others from four days before the rash appears until it disappears.
Measles cases are largely among unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. As of July 8, there have been over 1,200 confirmed measles cases in the US this year, marking a significant increase from recent years.
